Chrome OS First Look

Almost every techie is waiting with baited breath to see what Google is offering as a competitor to the likes of Windows and OSX. Google Os Screenshot

I personally love Google’s products thus far and use the likes of Chrome, Gmail and YouTube almost daily and I am extremely excited about Chrome OS. Having seen the screenshots for this OS from what I can see the OS seems more akin to a smartphone Operating System than a desktop one. It will certainly be interesting to see what Google has done with the extra resources a conventional computer has, such as a faster processor and more RAM (Random Access Memory) than a smartphone.

The operating system appears to be built around the chrome browser and it’s applications all appear to require internet access. The OS itself is built upon a stripped down version of the Linux Kernel so you won’t have to worry about viruses or malware unless you are extremely unlucky and come across a Linux virus. From what I’ve read I believe the OS will be extremely tiny and will only require a few hundred megabytes of hard drive space. You can bet it’ll be fast, just picture how fast your iOS runs or how fast android runs and then bring that idea to your computer. The OS will probably be able to boot up in seconds. Most of the applications appear to require internet connectivity and offline the OS will have greatly reduced functionality.

From what I have heard and seen I conclude that the OS is imagined and designed for a reality that doesn’t yet exist, a reality where worldwide wifi exits. We are at least 5-10 years away from that reality. Although I do believe the OS will have the power to knock out Windows 7 Starter as  the primary netbook OS as netbooks are computers which are created to connect on the internet on the go hence their name NETbook.  The OS will defeat Windows 7 in this area as it will be many times lighter than Windows 7 which for a netbook os includes lots of unnecessary functionality.

Chrome OS is widely expected to surface later this year around september time.
