Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff Announces Execution Via Twitter

As distasteful as it is, Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff sent out a tweet (via a mobile Twitter client) announcing the impending execution by firing squad of Ronnie Lee Gardner.

This is quite a way to announce someone’s death.

Shurtleff posted a total of three tweets from his iPhone, the most recent being a self-promoting one.

1) A solemn day. Barring a stay by Sup Ct, & with my final nod, Utah will use most extreme power & execute a killer. Mourn his victims. Justice

2) I just gave the go ahead to Corrections Director to proceed with Gardner’s execution. May God grant him the mercy he denied his victims.

3) We will be streaming live my press conference as soon as I’m told Gardner is dead. Watch it at http://www.attorneygeneral.Utah.gov/live.html

I’d love to hear your thoughts about this.  Leave a comment below or email me.

  1. I think that while this is not the normal means of announcing something like this, I don’t think that it is that out there. Think about some of the other things found out on Twitter. Twitter was were I first heard any of the famous celebrity deaths in the last year or so. Some people are using Twitter more and more like a major news source that this is just more news that you would have heard on TV.
