Where In The World Are You?

So I was thinking about the post I made the other day about social networking websites. There is a type of networking that I kind of forgot about and that I wanted to get everyone’s opinion on. Geo-location social networking is an up and coming new type of social networking that is taking the world by storm.

If you don’t know about location networking is, Wikipedia defines Geosocial networking as “social networking in which geographic services and capabilities such as geocoding and geotagging are used to enable additional social dynamics.” That means, your friends can see where you are and where you are going with one of these services.

Now I’m not here to tell you which site is my favorite or give you a review on all of the services out there, mostly because I don’t know everything about them all. I have used FourSquare and that’s about it. I know there are more out there I just haven’t seen a need to use more than one as of yet.

The thing that is supposed to be selling these services is the fact that it is not all online. With these services  you can go and find your ‘real’ friends in ‘real’ life and hang out with them. Or in some cases get ideas of where to go and what is fun to do at these places. Sounds good to me, right? Some people don’t think so.

One thing that has been going around the internet about these types of services is whether or not people should be using them or not. Is it safe to advertise your location at all times for the world to know?

Some people think that these types of services are very bad. They think that it is a horrible idea to broadcast your whereabouts to the entire internet whenever you change locations. Websites like Please Rob Me have come about to help try to raise awareness about these types services. Some think that showing where you are at can either lead to something like people knowing when you are not home which makes it easier to know when to rob someone. Some people I have also talked to some people that think that it just makes it 100 times easier to stalk someone.

Now what do you think? Do you use these services? Do you think that displaying your location to the internet is a bad idea? Let me know what you think.
