Google Launches Fiber Network With Up to 1 Gigabit/second Speeds!

Imagine downloading an HD full length feature film in under five minutes.  With today’s Internet speeds in the US, that sounds near impossible, doesn’t it?  What if I told you that speeds as high as 1 gigabit per second weren’t out of the question?  Google has recently purchased enormous amounts of underground fiber to use for its new fiber ISP.  It is going to use the fiber to build and test ultra high speed broadband networks in a small number of trial communities across the nation.  The speeds will be literally 100 times faster than the speeds most Americans have access to today, with 1 gigabit per second, fiber to the home broadband connections.  They will be offering the service to at least 50,000, and potentially up to 500,000 people.

On Google’s website, they listed a few goals they have for the fiber network.

  • Next generation apps: We want to see what developers and users can do with ultra high-speeds, whether it’s creating new bandwidth-intensive “killer apps” and services, or other uses we can’t yet imagine.
  • New deployment techniques: We’ll test new ways to build fiber networks; to help inform, and support deployments elsewhere, we’ll share key lessons learned with the world.
  • Openness and choice: We’ll operate an “open access” network, giving users the choice of multiple service providers. And consistent with our past advocacy, we’ll manage our network in an open, non-discriminatory, and transparent way.
  • Why is Google doing this?  Well, since most people don’t get online without using some kind of Google service or seeing Google ads, Google makes more money as long as it keeps people online.  1 gigabit per second speeds will definitely keep people online.

Do you want your community to get the Google fiber network?  Here’s how:

Google is requesting that government officials and residents alike nominate their communities for the trial.

If you are government official, click here to fill send Google a response.  What better way to get reelected than to be the one responsible for giving your community access to 1 gigabit per second Internet speeds?

If you are a not a government official, you can still nominate your community!  Just click here to send a response.

I’m very excited.  Hopefully this will be a successful project and will soon be available all over the country.

We’ll keep you updated as this project unfolds.
